WASHINGTON - The Italian ambassador to the USA, Mariangela Zappia, launched the Week of Women and Girls in Science on February 7 at Villa Firenze, in Washington, an initiative promoted by the Embassy itself together with the French Embassies and Germany, the Children's National Research Institute and George Washington University.
The review, built around the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which occurs on 11 February, aims to promote greater awareness on the subject and to promote more equal access for women in science, aiming to promote equal opportunities for study and career. On the occasion, the "Women in Science Diplomacy Club" was also launched to promote the gender perspective in science diplomacy. The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the State Department's DG for Science Affairs and Health at the US Department of Health also spoke at the launch event.
“It is well known that women are under-represented in STEM disciplines and that this results in a loss of talents, viewpoints and ideas that slow down development,” highlighted Ambassador Zappia. “More women in science add valuable value to research projects in all fields,” she added.
The program of the review includes, during the week, an exhibition at Georgetown University, the screening of the film "Hidden Figures" at the Children's National Research Institute and events organized by the French and German Embassies.
