ISCHIA, THE PEARL OF THE GULF OF NAPLES - MAP OF THE VILLAGES OF ITALY - TOURISM OF THE ROOTS

translated from Italian language with Google

The third Italian island by population, one of the most important and historical tourist destinations of our country and, above all, the jewel of the Gulf of Naples. This is Ischia, the largest of the Flegrean islands.

Inhabited since the Neolithic, as numerous finds testify, Ischia has been, according to the times, an impregnable fortress, a home for pirates and, for several years now, a great attraction for tourists from all over the world.

It is probably the infinite number of possibilities that the island offers, both to those who love the sea and to those who prefer a holiday dedicated to culture, which attracts them. For example, in the municipality of Lacco Ameno, there is the Archaeological Museum of Pithecusae, famous above all for containing the famous “Nestor's Cup”, one of the most famous archaeological finds in the whole nation.

Another reason to visit the island, of volcanic origin, are also its thermal springs, also famous all over the world and used since ancient times and also used by famous people such as Giuseppe Garibaldi, Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour and Arturo Toscanini.

But the real jewel of the island is its sea, with its crystalline waters full of surprises and treasures; to the most famous ones, one has also been added in the last few days. Someone has already baptized it as the "secret garden" of the sea of Ischia.

Sixty meters deep, a corner of extraordinary beauty emerges, a real biodiversity "hotspot", in the heart of the marine protected area "Regno di Nettuno", among the variegated depths of the island.

This is told by a series of extraordinary shots by Pietro Sorvino of ANS Diving Ischia, which capture - on the southern side of Ischia - the beauty of Savalia savaglia, a species that has always been considered rare and whose distribution, as the IUCN points out, was strongly reduced in the 50s-70s by underwater fishing, being commonly taken as an ornamental object.

HOW TO GET THERE: To reach the island of Ischia you have to take a hydrofoil or a ferry, from the ports of Naples, Pozzuoli and Procida, to which are added, in Summer, those of Salerno, Amalfi and Sorrento.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT: Surely the other islands of the Gulf, such as Capri and Procida, the latter also the capital of culture 2022.
